And We’re Off
Oak Hollow Campground, High Point, North Carolina
October 7-9
Day 1
After days of packing, prepping, shopping, cleaning and counting down… our first trip was finally here!
We pulled into Oak Hollow Campground around 2:30pm. It’s a pretty small campground with 107 RV sites with full hook-ups and 14 spots for tent camping. Sections A and C are more wooded with spaced-out sites, while B and D are gravel lots with hookups. The map does not do this camp ground justice. We thought our spot (C3) was a good distance from the lake, but in reality its was close. Plus, the entire section slopes gradually down to the lake, so we had a beautiful view of Oak Hollow lake.
As Chad pulled up to our spot, he asked me to hop out to help. (Recommendation to whoever is directing traffic: make sure you know exactly what the driver needs from you!). I stood behind the camper as he backed up to make sure he was staying in line with our spot and not backing over the sewer Chad was able to see and hear me through the back-up camera, which made this process much easier. While I know I held my breath (and probably made some faces) as Chad maneuvered the Airstream into the spot, he made it look easy and the process went smoothly. We leveled the Airstream using our LevelMatePRO (check out Chad’s review), which makes it very easy to get it level, especially in a site on a hill, as the ones at Oak Hollow are.
I unpacked/reorganized a few things inside as Chad got everything hooked up outside. Unfortunately, the sewer hose was broken. It hadn’t been used before, but had been sitting in the garage for five years, so we couldn’t be too upset. Fortunately, Chad learned the hose was broken when emptying the gray tank, not the black tank. So we looked up the nearest Walmart (only a few miles away, something to keep in mind when planning your first trip) and started a list. We forgot an outdoor table (which came in handy when grilling) and didn’t have enough snack food, so a trip to Walmart was vital.
The curtain over one of the beds also broke, but Chad was able to (temporarily fix it). Make sure you always bring a drill and some tools with you, you never know when they’ll come in handy!
We explored the camp ground a bit, which didn’t take long, since it is small. It is a great campground with beautiful views along the lake. It’s quiet and quaint, which I personally loved.
We made a trip to Walmart and ended up picking up pizza for dinner. We had planned to grill, but it got later than we planned and we still had to set up the grill, so we figured pizza would be a bit easier (and prevent me from getting hangry). For the next trip, I’ll plan a first night dinner that’s easy to heat up/put together after an afternoon of setting up the site.
Rosie was a natural. She settled into her spot on the couch where she could look out the window toward the lake. She tried to sleep with one of us, but there’s not quiet enough room in a twin bed for an adult and and 80 pound dog, so she settled into her dog bed.
We went to bed early (before 9pm!), ready for the next day of adventure!
Day 2
This was our only full day at Oak Hollow Camp Ground - and it was also my birthday! Chad’s birthday is just two days after mine, so we typically celebrate together. Chad made breakfast on the grill (which I told him I want every morning because of how good it was) and we had a lazy morning. Eventually, we got ready - an RV shower isn’t too bad! We filmed a video for Chad’s RV Reviews to introduce our Airstream and me the page.
We spent some time outside reading on what was a perfect fall day and took much-needed naps. Neither of us slept great the night before (though I didn’t really expect to), largely due to acorns falling on the Airstream throughout the night.
Though we were only 30 minutes from home, it still felt like a vacation. It was so refreshing to have a slow day of reading and walking around the campsite, rather than the usually busyness of every day life.
That evening, my parents came to the campsite to have birthday dinner and some peach cobbler with us.
Day 3
The final morning of our inaugural trip. We had a bit of a slow morning drinking coffee and grilling breakfast, and then started packing up the camper. It was amazing how much there was to pack up after a short trip, though it didn’t take too long. We dumped and flushed the tanks, hooked up the unit and were on our way home - both of us wishing we had one more day.
